It all started with an enthusiastic group of doctors engrossed in a subspecialty three-year academic course – DM - in Trauma Anesthesia & Acute Care at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh, a premier institute in the Northern India. These doctors formed a Trauma Anesthesia Group (TAG), of like-minded personals who recognized that saving lives after trauma requires not only optimal immediate care at the trauma site and during transport but rigorous research in fields of fluid resuscitation, airway management clinical monitoring and trauma surgery. So far TAG have been able to map the unmet needs of trauma care in India and have brought together experts spanning various clinical disciplines such as general surgery, ortho trauma, neuro trauma, transfusion medicine and nursing care to talk about trauma related care in India.
This group organized several small meetings over three years (2018-2020) prior to commencing a formal society. The Society of Trauma Anesthesia & Critical Care (STACC) has made remarkable strides in its mission to enhance trauma care in India since its inception. Over the years, STACC has established itself as a pivotal organization in the field, bringing together a diverse group of medical professionals dedicated to improving trauma outcomes. The society's journey has been characterized by a series of achievements and a steadfast commitment to expanding its reach and impact. A few of these achievements are – Organizing the first annual national conference of STACC at PGIMER, Chandigarh with International support, establishment of an official website - www.stacc.com – of the Society, creation of trauma care courses as applicable to the Indian subcontinent (these courses have been applauded by the government and are held annually since 2018). An important aspect of these courses is to promote the use of point of care ultrasound in early diagnosis of injuries and their management and to teach the neglected field of pain management in such patients by pharmacological interventions and regional nerve blocks. Further the Society has been able to give a boost to training of first responders who are responsible to for bringing trauma victims from the injury sites to the hospitals. Lastly STACC has also been involved in organizing outreach programs for citizens and health care workers to bring about awareness of organ donation after brain death.
As of now, STACC boasts a membership of over 100 life members, a significant milestone that reflects the society's growing influence and the trust it has earned within the medical community. The society's doors are open to all medical personnel involved in trauma care, inviting them to join a collective effort aimed at elevating standards of care across the nation. This inclusive approach underscores STACC's recognition of the multifaceted nature of trauma care, which requires collaboration across various disciplines.
Looking ahead, STACC envisions a future where its membership base continues to grow, reflecting the society's expanding reach and the increasing awareness of the importance of specialized trauma care. The goal is not just to increase numbers but to foster a community of professionals who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of trauma patients. STACC's ambition extends beyond its current membership; the society aims to establish separate chapters for nursing care and paramedical health workers in the coming years. This expansion will ensure that all aspects of trauma care, from pre-hospital care to bedside management, are addressed with the same level of expertise and dedication.
The creation of these specialized chapters will be a significant step forward, recognizing the critical roles that nurses, and paramedical staff play in trauma care. By providing a platform for these professionals, STACC will enhance the quality of care provided to trauma patients, ensuring that every member of the care team is equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to save lives. This holistic approach to trauma care is what sets STACC apart and positions it as a leader in the field. STACC's journey has been one of growth, collaboration, and a relentless pursuit of excellence in trauma care. With over 100 life members and a vision for the future that includes the expansion of its membership and the creation of specialized chapters, STACC is poised to make an even greater impact on trauma care in India. The society's commitment to inclusivity, education, and continuous improvement will undoubtedly lead to better outcomes for trauma patients across the country, solidifying STACC's legacy as a pioneer in the field.
